Last night was the night that all good Cambridge crusties assembled in the Corn Exchange to laugh at jokes nearly as old as the band telling them. Oh, and listen to some folk-music-with-drum-and-bass. Amongst the classics, there was a new song by Chris Leslie about a man who travelled with Lord John Franklin, but the highlight of my evening was seeing this.

A bloody bass mandolin! Look at the size of it! (You can see it with the whole person attached here.) I mean, who knew such a thing existed?!?

Whoa. I want one. I love bass intruments, especially contrabassoons, which sound like old plumbing. I myself am a bass flutist (http://www.contrabass.com/pages/flutes.html), whenever I get the chance, which isn't often.

Ooh, beautiful things, those flutes. I've not heard a contrabassoon - bassoons sound a bit like plumbing!

The mandobass was brilliant, it had a great sound. She had plenty of stage banter about it, such as taking it on an EasyJet (cheapo) flight to Paris. It was booked under its own name: "Mandobass, James".

I am so jealous of you.

*g* Yep, my brother-in-law-in-training books for himself and "Catherine" the Cello; Yo-Yo Ma's is apparently named Petunia.

I think that website has links to downloading the music as MP3s, should you be desperate for some mandobass action...
