To two talented and generous people, [livejournal.com profile] thrihyrne, and [livejournal.com profile] seemag. Many happy returns! Sorry the LJ outage has made me late in posting.

Thank you!

I had a great birthday, and am now enjoying a quiet day of computer time and hopefully working on a couple more Eowyn/Faramir drabbles. I seem to have missed the grand LJ outage due to my birthday party. I'm certainly glad it's back!

I'm glad you had a good day :-)

It was weird that LJ went down, and even weirder that I didn't experience withdrawal symptoms...!

And thanks for the birthday wishes!

Your birthday drabble

It's posted at my LJ, but wanted you to have a copy. (and yes, I just posted it and then realized that, d'oh, she's not the princess. Urg. Need to do right by my Rohirrim and The Professor.)

Day Two: Approach
dedicated to Altariel for her birthday

Faramir paced his room, the walls, the courtyards. Despite his many footfalls, restfulness remained ever ahead of him; tragedy lurked behind in his dim shadow. His feet took him to the Houses’ kitchen, where, unsurprisingly, he found Meriadoc.

“Steward!” the hobbit exclaimed, scooting back from the table.

“No, no, please be as you were.” Faramir sat down across the board. He felt an unlooked-for kinship with the halfling, his wounds shackling him to the stone walls of Minas Tirith as he himself was bound. Despite Meriadoc’s stature, Faramir knew a devoted solider when he saw one, and ached at their doubled impotence. Better to think of something else, even if only for a while.

“You know the White Lady of Rohan.”

The hobbit swallowed and dabbed at his mouth, vying for time before he answered.

“I knew Dernhelm, my lord. But I would be privileged to tell you of him.”

Clever, perceptive Merry.

A lovely piece - I liked the insights into Faramir's state of mind, feeling shackled to the walls of the City, and trying to find something to distract him (or thinking of a way of justifying being distracted?).

Thank you :-)

Clever, perceptive Merry.

Glad you think so, too. He is my favorite hobbit, after all, and I've always believed that he and Eowyn would have had a complicated relationship to work through in those dark days in Minas Tirith since essentially he had been lied to. Not to hurt him, but still.

thinking of a way of justifying being distracted?

Most certainly. And I'm thrilled that you like the imagery. I just see the three of them as feeling trapped, each in their own way: Eowyn as a caged bird, Faramir as shackled, and Merry as abandoned. Perhaps that's just me, though. ;)

Merry is my favourite hobbit too, although [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin has persuaded me of Pippin's many charms.

He wasn't quick off the mark there! I wonder if he would sympathize, given that he had to hide away to ride to battle too.
