Poking around my friendsfriends lists, I found this fascinating analysis of the use of Page 3 for propaganda purposes.

If you wanted to get young men interested in politics, the Page 3 girls will be more effective than say, a debate between Christopher Hitchens and George Stephanopolous, on the meaining of Clausewitz in the twenty-first century.

Serious questions, does anyone actually read the text? Do they change any minds, or are they just preaching to the choir? Newspapers tend to attract like minded readers. US talk show host, G Gordon Liddy promoted his show with an annual calendar featuring pretty women in skimpy underwear posing with various firearms. While his listeners likely got a laugh out of hanging something that politically incorrect in their offices, my own guess is that not to many members of Handguun Control Inc. saw the calendar and were persuaded to join the NRA.

I think most people read The Sun for the sport.

incredible isn't it? On the plus side - even Sun readers know it's a load of complete tosh - I doubt if they take it too seriously

It's quite bizarre. It reads like a parody.

We spent a happy half hour last night imagining those priests from the Calendario Romano with speech bubbles saying things like: "Evolution, not revelation" and "Love between two consenting adults is the most natural thing in the world, as any right-minded person knows".
