Still a bit to go...

Bellwether, Remake and Uncharted Territory by Connie Willis
Three novellas: I suspect Remake would work better if I knew more about the films it was riffing on; Uncharted Territory had a lot of fun ideas; and Bellwether was a gem – funny, clever, fresh and hugely entertaining.

Marjorie and Co. by Lorna Hill
One from Girls Gone By Publishers, and a nice read, but not one of my favourites from them. I read it because the author wrote the Sadlers Wells series, one of which I read as a girl and enjoyed. I’ll think about the rest of the series, but I have my eye on the Antonia Forest and Susan Coolidge ones first. I think I enjoyed the introduction most, which was written by the author’s daughter, and told the story about how her mother (a vicar’s wife) took on a local squire over traps he was using, and ended up in a big court case that the R.S.P.C.A. used to get the traps banned.

Kim by Rudyard Kipling
I made a terrible error trying to read this during the heat wave. Which was not conducive to paying attention. I should have put it down and started again. I feel really bad about this.

The Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith
[livejournal.com profile] katlinel’s recommendation from the Big Read list. I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it – I thought I might get sad watching people make fun of Mr Pooter – but I should trust [livejournal.com profile] katlinel more.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
I wasn’t going to bother with this because of the hype, but got good recommendations from people of sense. A story written from the POV of an autistic teenage boy, trying to work out the many puzzles around him. One of the occasions when the hype is true – I highly recommend it.

The CEO of the Sofa by P. J. O’Rourke
He makes me laugh. Anything else will just incriminate me, won’t it?

My Friend Rose, My Friends the Mrs Millers, My Friends From Cairnton, My Friend My Father and My Friends the Macleans by Jane Duncan
God Bless [livejournal.com profile] katlinel, not just for lending me these books, for lending them to me intelligently, so that I benefited from the order in which I was reading them. They got better and better as I read on – My Friends the Macleans was a suspenseful domestic and psychological horror story. But my heart is with My Friend My Father – how could my heart not be with a daughter’s loving memoir of her father? I loved this book immensely.

I love that.

How do you find the time and energy to do all this reading?

It's what I've been reading since January, so it's eight months worth of stuff.

Plus I'm doing all the reading I should have done as a teenager.

I love one of the scenes with Carrie where I think she sums up what the reader feels. I can't remember the exact words, but she basically tells him that he's a silly old fogey, but she loves him anyway.

but I should trust katlinel more.

Too bloody right. You and the rest of universe.

There'll be another batch of 'My Friends' coming your way soon.
