So - do you like my icon? Look - it's thin, windswept and interesting me. Have I made myself too glamourous ? possibly. Lets just chalk it up to wishful thinking. Weird that LJ has changed all my old defaulted icons to this one though. So it makes the post where I asked about the icons use the icon I created after getting your reply. Weird...
The user pics page sets any new icon to your default icon (there's a little check box at the bottom of the page). You can change your default back at the user pics info page.

The whole icons thing is a bit weird. Trixie and I ran into it a while ago, and we talked about some of the things that can happen (http://www.livejournal.com/users/trixieleitz/77504.html?thread=279488#t279488).
It looks as though the user pictures were originally meant to be a variation on the mood indicators. After that discussion with Trixie, I saw another discussion, and gathered that (quoting from an e-mail to Trixie) the design of the system was that you were expected to give an icon one or more keywords (e.g. 'happy, overjoyed'), and that you would then make a post, specifying just one of those keywords. Later, you could create a second happy icon, and have one of the icons with the keyword 'happy' and the other with 'overjoyed'. Posts made with the 'happy' keyword would be associated with one icon, and 'overjoyed' posts would show the other icon. However, the way that the web forms and my LJ client work, I can't specify just a single keyword - I have to choose a specific icon's entire set of keywords, as if it were the icon's name rather than its keywords.
If you want to use your default icon for a post, but you want the post to continue to have that icon even if your default changes, then you need to specify that icon explicitly.
I was shocked that no one else has an interest in Trevor Coooper. Have you heard he's playing Churchill at present? (Soldiers, at the Finborough Theatre, SW10)

Ahem, sorry! Not that I'm a pedant, or anything.
