Titles meme
May. 6th, 2004 12:38 pmThis meme is all over the place.
Pick five, or ten, or more, of your fic titles. List them in your journal and explain how you came up with each one.
1. The Fabric of Our Lives: Usually I don’t start stories without having a title, but this one wrote itself one grey afternoon, when I was meant to be doing some work (does that need saying?), rather than fiddling with DS9 fic on my Psion (writing DS9 fic on that Psion is what gave me RSI, I reckon – serves me right for skiving). Anyway, this one turned out to be about wedding dresses, and lost chances, and resilience, and some other stuff too, but I didn't have a title for it. I turned it over to my beta, the stellar Cardie-ologist (whose fic will soon be appearing on my DS9 site), and she suggested this title, which I think was once the slogan for an advertising campaign for cotton in the US. It definitely does the job.

2. Lady Lazarus: Ob. story using Sylvia Plath. "I eat men like air" seemed very appropriate for Anna Grant, as did the chance to use some burial and resurrection imagery.
*
3. The Fire Sermon: "Tell me,
altariel1, what are you writing at the moment instead of the B7 story you promised me?" asked
espresso_addict one fine day back at the start of 2002.
"Well,
espresso_addict, I have decided to write a sequence of five stories about Faramir, using the titles of the constituent parts of The Waste Land as inspiration," responded I.
"I bet you have trouble writing one called The Fire Sermon," said she.
Alas for
espresso_addict, it was the first one I wrote, and the one that gave me the idea in the first place. And so a whole vein of TS Eliot derived Tolkien fiction began to be mined, rather than the B7 story which
espresso_addict is still owed.

4. Closure: It's about psychotherapy. And some messed up people struggling to stop the mental rot. And Garak closes the shop. So: Closure. D'ya see what I did there?
*
5. The Last Days of Roj Blake: Does what it says on the tin.
