I'm going to jump in before altariel can answer and say 'Hattifattners!' because I love them so. Hattifattners. Now I know what they were called in the original.

My guess is that Tove J got their appearance from Baltic rock paintings. Have you seen those?

Well, I'm a Finn like she was but don't know where she got the inspiration from:). There was one guy at a Halloween party a couple of years ago who dressed as one and was called "menstrual pad" all throughout the party. He ended up winning the prize for "best costume":D.

Ooh, no - do you have a link?

Wish I knew which one *that* was in English:). Hey, if you ever want Moomin stuff, there's plenty of it here, I could send you some. I'm a bit disturbed at being called "little Mu" because I'm short and wear my red hair in a bun:D...

Here she is (and hopefully this icon has worked too). Gosh, I love the Moomins (they were the first books I read by myself). One of Tove Jansson's adult novels was recently translated into English, a really lovely book (The Summer Book).

Damn, can't remember that one's name. I remember reading the Moomin books when I was little, and I *didn't* like them because they had such grown-up subjects. One dealt with them all wanting to be bohemian artists, and 3-year old Krizu went "WTF? What's a bohemian?" and was very frustrated:).

Some of the stop-motion Moomin animations took my breath away as a kid, I adored them. Probably made in the Eighties, eerie stuff...

By any chance is it "MÃ¥rran"?

I loved them because they dealt with things like putting on plays in the middle of a flood. Although learning the word "melancholy" when I was 4 probably wasn't good for me.

You're right, there were some really weird Moomin cartoons in the 80s!

I looked earlier today and couldn't find one. Let you know if I do.

Suddenly it all makes sense. (Says the guy whose adolescence seems, in retrospect, to have been dominated by Feynman, Nietzsche, and Yes, Minister.)

I also learned the word "meerschaum" from the Moomin books at around the same time, but that doesn't seem to have had as much effect.

I've found a few scholarly papers without pictures; the best pic so far is here:

http://www.values.ch/Art-Gallery/Rock-Paintings/rock-paintings5.htm

The picture of the boat on the stamp (the big version is at the bottom of the page). There are a lot of baltic rock carvings showing boats with lines of little peg-like people standing in a row on board. I've seen pictures where the little people have no features except staring eyes, but I can't find any online.

These are great, thank you for tracking them down. They are very hattifattenish.
