For the second part: is Bridget Jones' Diary better than the sequel? I read the sequel first and didn't find it all that funny.
I found the first one absolutely hilarious - I sat and read it through in an afternoon, and had tears in my eyes from laughing (the thought of her birthday dinner of blue soup, omelette, and marmalade still has me giggling). The second book is more of the same, but not as slickly done, I think. If the humour didn't appeal in the second one, the first might not work.
