Read The War of the Worlds, for fuck's sake! It is the absolute, archetypal tale of alien invasion, and the foundation for a huge chunk of 20th century SF. Despite this, it is also very good. I'm sure you'll enjoy the pessimistic portrayal of humanity in extremis, not to mention the slagging-off of comfortable clergymen and armchair social-engineers.
