So the woman who dialled my home phone number at 5.15am this morning just rang again, and was very puzzled as to why I was answering her home phone. It transpired she was pressing a '3' in the STD code, when she needed to be pressing a '2'.

Grrr! Some people just shouldn't be allowed to use the telephone system at all.

And let's not even touch the question of why she was dialling her own home phone number at 5.15am.

I figure she must have programmed it wrong into her mobile. Hopefully now she'll sort it out. We get phone calls meant for this town all the time.

5.15am...? Coming home from the airport? Locked out by evil goblins? Car wouldn't go faster than 1/2 mile an hour and it's taking her ages to get home from work? Spent all night trying to programme her new mobile and only now had the chance to check she'd done it right?

You'd think she'd have twigged that something was wrong with the number when she (presumably) got your answerphone at 5.15, instead of the evil goblins that were occupying her house. Oh well.

I used to get loads of wrong numbers at bizarre times of day on my NTL number, speaking (I think) Chinese on a bad line. I can only assume that someone had mistakenly sent my number back to the extended family at home, who were then trying to get in touch. I never could make them understand what was going on. It must have cost them a fortune.

Doh!

Well, I'm still getting calls for Emily Wade, who had my number before I did two years ago...

I think that family had our phone number in Reading too...

Our house was a student house for ages, and for a while we used to get catalogues addressed to a "Mr Socks". Having no forwarding address, and being nosy, we opened one of them, and it turned out to be a catalogue for footwear fetishists. I have often wondered if the fetish or the name came first.

Years ago one of my friends got a call in the early hours of the morning from someone who spoke rapid French at her. She said it was far too early, please go away, and put the phone down. He rang back and this time tried English. He was trying to book a hotel in Marseilles. Andrea explained that he'd got NZ, there was a stunned silence, then: "Sacre bleu! One zero too many!"

Heh! My mum got a call from someone in NZ one morning - this chap got very excited when he found out he'd rung someone in the UK, and started chatting, was even more excited when mum said her son had emigrated to NZ, he wanted to know all about that... well, it wasn't costing her anything, so they chatted for a good ten minutes, LOL!
