In between class prep, I have spent a blameless few hours uploading my Tolkien fic to AO3, and shuffling the stories around into series. This lets me put all the stories about Faramir and Gandalf together, in chronological order, or the family ones set in Ithilien, or the ones set amongst the Rangers of Ithilien.
But absolutely my favourite is The House of Mardil, where I've collected the stories about Denethor, Finduilas, Boromir, and Faramir. The stories pass through some dark places, and were written across 9 years. But the order, o my sisters! I haven't put them in order of writing, but chronologically in relation to LotR, and it's caused the most wonderful symmetries! The series now starts with the courtship of Denethor and Finduilas, takes a swing to the bleak immediately, passes through the childhood stories (bittersweet, mostly), and then culminates in a story from Denethor's POV at the end of LotR, which is the earliest one I wrote (in 2002). Then there is this gently cathartic coda at the end, from Finduilas' POV, that I only wrote at the start of this year. I'm so pleased with how it's come out, and of course they weren't written with this plan in mind.
