Election night
Sep. 28th, 2003 11:48 pmOn Friday night we watched the June 1970 BBC election broadcast, on BBC Parliament. Brilliant television - not just social and political history, but also the cultural history of seeing a television transmission from that time. Just what the BBC should be doing on digital. What stood out?
The fact that live transmissions from the regions were all still in black and white.
Very few of the political names were recognizable. Jeffrey Archer was winning his first seat in Louth. A very young David Steel saw the Liberals collapse from 13 seats to 7. Paisley won in Antrim.
The shock of realizing that this date was closer to the 1945 election than it is to now.
A very youthful David Dimbleby (presumably the man has an ageing picture in his attic), plus Robin Day and Cliff Michelmore.
The achingly winceworthy treatment of the 'ladies' who had just become MPs.
That thing that happens in Monty Python when it suddenly cuts to an extremely ridiculous still photograph all of a sudden made much more sense.
