Powercut

Ooh, powercut. Everything went dead as I was mid-email, giving a eerie 'world's gonna end any minute now' feel to the day. Power was only out for an hour and a half (I'm assuming it's something to do with the heat) but I could feel the Blitz Spirit descend on me. Also, it made me productive.

Hope you didn't lose too much! This is one thing I like about using a notebook: at least I get chance to save things.

Also, it made me productive.

Yay for scented gel pens!

Btw, you never know: maybe the world really is gonna end any minute now.

I think these new scented gel pens might make me slightly high. Result!

And they're legal, too! Maybe I should try them after all...

Do they do scented sparkly ones? I can't do without my sparkle.

These are scented and sparkly. And from WH Smith.

Mmmmmmm. Though even that isn't quite enough to tempt me out in this weather!

Only insanity could tempt anyone out this afternoon. Good job I stacked up on the chocolate yesterday.

Hmm, that's a point. If it still feels too warm this evening, give me a ring/e-mail rather than walking in!

You know, whenever CNN or public radio cuts out on me I wonder whether "they" have finally nuked Atlanta or Washington, DC. That's a grim commentary on the world we live in, I suppose. Or maybe it's just a grim commentary on my own personal paranoia... :-)

What you didn't see were the green flashes in the sky; or the triffid lurking outside your door... :-)

Triffid? Lurking outside Altariel's door? Damn, I thought I'd killed that stupid thing. Apparently the Magic Cactus of Irreality can even survive a chainsaw pruining!

It says that it has come in peace.

Hmm. Should I believe it?

Well, I did give it a rather hard pruning... Maybe it's learned its lesson. Even the Magic Cactus of Irreality doesn't deserve to be left outside in the heat wave you're experiencing. I say be merciful and let it in, as long as you have a garbage disposal you can shove it down if necessary.

(You DO have a garbage disposal, don't you?)

Garbage disposal is a bit hi-tech for this benighted island, along with air-conditioning and functional public transport. Hell, it was too much trouble keeping the power on today.

If the Magic Cactus of Irreality is truly sorry and promises to behave itself, I'll let it come in and stand near the fridge. But any more of that bwahaha-ing and it'll be out on its prickly ear and onto the compost heap.

I was like that throughout the 1980s. I honestly didn't think the world would make it to the 1990s.

That sounds more than fair on your part.

(And I guess if the Magic Cactus could withstand the chainsaw, a garbage disposal would hardly faze it!)

The Cactus and I have definitely entered into a period of detente.

I have spent the day slumped on the sofa. The Magic Cactus has been slumped in the kitchen. Peace in our time.

But I'm still worrying what it's planning when the weather cools down...

Best not to think about it.

Besides, once things cool down it won't be too long before the killing frosts arrive. The Magic Cactus might not like the heat you're having now, but it REALLY won't like the cold. You'll finally have a credible threat you can use to twist its arms - er, make that spines - should it misbehave again!

Just in case the winter turns out not to be cold enough for Cactus Control, I've filled the freezer with gin and ice cream. This way, the Magic Cactus will be dependent on me for getting its fixes.

A clever plan indeed!
