So far this week I've watched 32 episodes of Deep Space Nine. And do you know what? I bloody love Deep Space Nine. I thought I was falling out of love with TV SF. In fact, I just really dislike Battlestar Galactica.

Because I have been having such a good time, I am feeling bountiful, and therefore all of you who have consistently voted WRONGLY in my polls have a chance to get yourself safely onto the Right List For When the Revolution Comes. This poll is EASY.

[Poll #1258368]

Meanwhile... Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] nhw for pointing me towards BookMooch, a community where you earn points by giving books away, and then use those points to get people to send you books that you want to read. It looks like a good way of getting hold of mass market paperbacks that you want to read but for which you don't want to fork out upwards of six quid. I am here.

([livejournal.com profile] the_wild_iris, if you're not there already, you might want to take a look: there's a list of Lloyd Alexander books available.)

Which is just as well, all things considered!

It can be, if you're writing something you don't love. Believe me, I know, I've written for the Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie Langford team!

From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
Oh, I think that team would be fun! Not as much as Bonnie Langford and Colin or Sylv and Ace, obviously.

I did ask at the time if it couldn't be Colin, what with him being the best audio Doctor...

Having said that, while I hated 7/Mel on TV to the extent of giving up on the series (lured back only by the Daleks), writing for them wasn't so bad after all. Mainly cos you can then try to correct all the flaws, especially where Bonnie's concerned...

7/Mel was when I picked the show up again after dropping it during Colin's era, so memory treats them fondly. Actually, I think picking up the show then that was even my gateway back into fandom.

Both... and Romulans too.

Bookmooch is only really useful if you're actually prepared to part with books. Not one of my talents, I'm afraid.

I just really liked 'Paradise Towers'. Anyway, you're the one who picked Klingons!

I have lots of contemporary fiction that I'm never going to reread, so I may as well use them as tokens for getting hold of other similar books.

Paradise Towers is really strange because - and I've said this since it first aired - it has a totally brilliant, fantastic, script, which is brutally murdered stone fucking dead by... Absolutely *everything* else about it. Except maybe Clive wossname.

And what's wrong with the Klingons?

Anyway, I could have said Ferengi...

Hah, yes, good description. This is where fanfic viewing habits come in handy (viewing a story that isn't necessarily there on screen...).

And what's wrong with the Klingons?

When there are Cardassians on offer?

I confess I've never quite understood the thing some people have about Cardassians in general. I like one Cardassian very much, but en masse they don't do much for me. Not that Klingons do either; I quite like... um... Martok? or his wife? But not that much. I'm trying to think of a race I like as a race. Ferengi? Well, mostly Quark and Brunt. Bajorans? Kai Winn's wonderful, but again it's down to the occasional individual. Vorta? Pah Wraiths? Winn finally rejects them, so they can't be that good.

The thing I like about DS9 is that, instead of the Federation view shrugging off all petty challenges, there are lots of world views, or galaxy views, all arguing away with equal conviction. But I can't think of one with which I actually identify; I appear to enjoy the cacophony.

Ah, but while the Cardies are more realistically developed, their females aren't as sexy and none of the males would be as good a beer-sinking partner down the pub as Martok would.

I totally believe that a night on the town with Garak would be a night to remember.

I'm sure it would, but for different reasons and probably not as much raucous partying fun

From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
Ah, I see where we differ - I'm not much of one for raucous partying fun. I guess on a night out with Garak you'd talk about books, perhaps undermine a government or two...

I'm on Bookmooch, too, after some arm-twisiting by my SiL. Am not going to put my BM username here, in the interests of preserving some illusion of meatspace/LJ separation, but I have just friended you there :)

Do we get extra points if we CONSISTENTLY vote correctly? And by points I mean, positions in the new regime?

Ooh, interesting point. Yes, those who consistently vote correctly might well be the most useful and trusted advisors. They will have demonstrated Right Thinking.
