Can anyone help [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy with this request:

"I need a fic - any fic (by which I mean UNPUBLISHED FANFIC), any section of fic, but of a TV fandom would be best - which retells a scene occuring in canon as it happens but fleshes the bare bones of the script out with the emotional reactions of the characters around it. I'm not looking for a post-episode missing scene, but an actual retelling of a scene that happens in an episode. I need to quote it in my paper. Anyone? There are bajillions, I just can't think of one off the top of my head right now."

See here for more information.

I've got a few that tell scenes in flashback, or similar, if that would work? I've also got one that details the recording of a message that's played in an episode. Some of them are on the web but weren't published in zines; I also have at least one that's just been on my LJ.

Perhaps we should all try to write one

The end of Ika's Awake and Find No from ttba might fit that pattern, as I recall.

From a movie and published on the net `

He is there when I reach for my sword, holding it ready like a page serving his master

“We have trusted you this far and you have not led us astray. Forgive me. I was wrong to despair.”

I smile at him and clasp his shoulder.

“U-moe edaved, Legolas.”

There is nothing to forgive… for I do indeed lead us all to our deaths.

The words tremble in my mouth and beat against my ribs, but I swallow them. He is frightened too. I see it in his eyes and in his set face. He looks like a youth waiting edgily on the eve of his first battle and, for all his hundreds of years, the truth is close to that. Legolas is a warrior of the woods, where one hunts one’s prey with cunning, then launches sudden, quick attacks from the vantage of the trees. Now must he face his first true battle surrounded by walls of stone. My dreams tell me that here, perhaps, do I face the great doom Elrond foresaw for me. Desperately do I wish I could save my friend from it. I tighten my clasp: may I share courage if I cannot give hope.

Or still from a movie but completely unpublished:

“Farmers, farriers, stable boys… these are no soldiers.” Aragorn’s tone is weary as he looks around the armoury.

I watch an old man fumble with knotted hands at a sword he would once have swung with pride and I nod.

“Most have seen too many winters.”

Like Aragorn I’m tired. I am weary from our days of fruitless pursuit - though less so than the Man or the Elf, it is true, even a Dwarf’s endurance must eventually run out – but more I’m bone-achingly tired of watching this dark shadow poison and destroy everything that was once fair in Middle-earth. It’s not weariness I feel from the Elf though – he almost vibrates beside me, as tautly drawn as one of his bows strings.

“Or too few,” he spits.

The bitter words fall into an increasing pool of silence as the Men around us stop to listen to these strangers. Without noticing Legolas continues.

“Look at them! They’re frightened. I can see it in their eyes.”

I close my eyes in exasperation. It’s a good thing his father made him a warrior prince and not a diplomat.

He turns on Aragorn now and drops into Elvish. Though I’ve picked up more of his misbegotten tongue than I’d like to admit I can pick out only a handful of words. Like all the silent watchers, I hear the anger though. I don’t think Legolas has forgiven Aragorn for falling off that cliff yet. Aragorn’s no more sweet tempered so they snarl away at each other. I struggle to follow. There’s some numbers – three and ten, Edoras, fighting… if I grasp at one word I miss the next. I grip my axe tighter in frustration but then Legolas’s last sentence is short and, for a wonder, I know all the words. They will all die!

I barely have time to wonder if this lack of tact is an Elvish trait or if he’s just too young to understand that there are things that no one needs to say. Beside me, Aragorn has drawn himself up and, despite the dirt and drab clothing, it is the King of Men who glares fire at Legolas and proclaims in Westron.

“Then I shall die as one of them!”

There is silence after that. Legolas looks as though he has been suddenly shoved back outside a fence he had forgotten existed and I wonder whether Aragorn changed to Westron for his audiences’ sake after all. At times, the two of them will use Elvish to hide secrets but more often it just seems part of their companionship. Now Aragorn is glaring scorn while Legolas looks bereft. ‘All very well - or not!’ I feel like chiding Aragorn ‘- but a king considers the people he leads first.’ Beyond the two of them the old men and boys stand slack-armed and frightened. I don’t know if it the sight of them or the Elf that stops him but no more words come. Instead, he draws a hard breath and walks away. Legolas moves to follow him but I grab his arm.

“Let him go, lad. Let him be.”

He looks down at me, every inch the outraged Elven prince and I curse all royalty and both my stiff-necked friends. I don’t move my hand though. I don’t apologise for the ‘lad’ that offended him either. He can be as many centuries old as he likes – but I’m confident that if we could translate our ages into a common measure I’d be his elder by a considerable amount.

Ooh, these might work, thank you - I'm sure published on the web is fine, do you have links?

Links to some, others are just sitting on my hard drive. Email you the files later today?

Does it have to be a good one? Because I vaguely remember coming across something similar in a BSG shipper fic, which I didn't like very much, though.

Off the top of my head, my (or your!) Firefly drabble Exodus is an interpretation of a pause in dialogue. I'm sure there are many, many better ones by other people, but can't think of specifics atm.

I don't know! If you have the link to hand, that would be great, but don't go hunting around for it - I think there may be enough examples now.

Okay, here are the ones on my LJ-- the only ones that aren't on the hard drive, afaik.

http://thanatos-kalos.livejournal.com/553897.html#cutid1 (making a recording which is later shown to other characters)

http://thanatos-kalos.livejournal.com/550662.html#cutid1 (in brief flashbacks bits of scenes which actually aired are gone through, though they might be too brief).

Great! So I don't have to start digging through fandom newsletters in search of a rather mediocre story.
