Off in a bit for a long weekend in Devon. I went for a long walk up the river on Wednesday, as far as Baits Bite Lock. It was beautiful, in that severe and slightly mad fenland way. Yesterday I walked into town. And today I can barely put any weight on my left foot. Stupid healthy living. Hope you all have excellent weekends.

Thank you. I hope that your bad foot doesn't spoil your weekend in Devon.

Ouch, your poor foot! I hope it's better soon - and doesn't cramp your style too much in Devon. You'll obviously just have to spend plenty of time sitting down. Enjoy it!

I was intending to sit around and make queenly demands. Everything can be made to work for the good!

Does the guillotine lock actually work? Is the whole thing just a stop lock, or is there a real change in water level between the two ends?

Hope the foot recovers soon. Have a great weekend.

Ooh! You came back!

Are you going back to CWIL?

Ooh, I like it up there. In, as you say, a slightly mad, fenland way. I always like to think of a picture my cousin drew for me after a trip to Ely Abbey that we made of 'the prince of the Fen People' who married the woman who founded the Abbey - he had webbed feet and hands and a crown of seaweed. Hope the foot gets better soon - it's not developing webbing, is it? - and have fun in Devon.

Hope you have an excellent weekend and rest that foot :)

I'm so sorry - I missed a whole slew of your recent posts and only just realised that you're back in the country. Welcome back, and many congratulations on what sounds like your amazingly productive and brave time away. *hugs*

Bah to healthy living. It's not very good for you.

Anyway, I hope you have a restful and wonderful weekend, with excellent service.

Ooh, Baits Bite Lock, I got lost around there once, looking for Milton Country Park on my bicycle. Healthy living is a dangerous thing indeed - I hope your foot recovers soon!

Hope you are having a wonderful time! We are being house pixies today: nesting and making it tidy.
Will we be seeing you both next weekend?

I knew I avoided exercise for a reason!

I hope your poor foot is soon back to normal.

It was brilliant, thank you: we were down near Totnes, in a tiny place called Hope Cove. It was gorgeous weather on the Saturday for pottering around, chucked it down on Sunday, but we managed to find cake and tea, so not all was lost. Lots of good eating, and game-playing, and snoozing. Excellent stuff!

I came back! Did you manage to get your hands on that film in the end?

I'm going to go to CWIL this Thursday, knackered foot permitting.

I didn't see a boat passing through, but so far as I know the lock works: there's a lock-keeper's house there, and there was a change in water level.

There's a road that leads into Milton just a little further on, but that's definitely the long way round to the country park - quicker to shoot up Milton Road and go in that way, I suspect. But not as pretty!

Eee! I emailed you last week about the weekend - did that email not arrive? I'll try again.

I knew I should have stuck with reclining on the sofa! I'm still hobbling around, but I don't have anywhere to go this week, so I can rest up.

Aw, I can't make this week's or I'd offer you a lift - what have you done to it?

Also are you still up for roleplaying on Sundays?

I did a lot of walking last week and then, running for the bus on Thursday, something went 'ping', and it's been painful to walk on since then. A lot better today, after resting up the whole of yesterday. Hope your migraine is going.

I'm definitely still up for roleplaying, although this Sunday I will need to do some household related stuff that's been hanging around since jetlag.

I'll have a conflab with Mark - we're slap in the middle of a really quite brain-aching adventure at the minute, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to introduce a new character out of the blue, but he already knows you're interested and I'll remind him you're back :)

I have personfully resisted all forms of exercise this week, mostly sitting still and eating chocolate chip cookies. Somebody has to!

The foot seems to be improving after a couple of days sitting still and eating chocolate chip cookies.

It was a lovely weekend, even with heavy rain on Sunday. [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel and our friend J used the opportunity to do heroic things to an ox-tail. Yummy yummy yummy!

I wish the foot was getting webbing, that would be much more interesting than "it went ping while I ran for the bus".

Devon was lovely, despite one day of rain. Mr A. did yummy things to an ox-tail.

Yes! Someone has to! And you are most noble in sacrificing yourself to the cause.

(And I read Moominland Midwinter last week, and it is quite lovely, and Little My is adorable.)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Do you have any of the others, or shall I keep an eye out around here? They do tend to turn up periodically in the Haunted Bookshop, and relatively inexpensively.

(I get very sad at the bit where Moomintroll can't wake his mamma.)

That'd be lovely! I'll email you over the weekend.

I do have some of the others, as follows:

Finn Family Moomintroll
Tales from Moomin Valley
Comet in Moominland
Moominsummer Madness (many thanks!)

Many thanks for the offer to keep an eye open for them.

That bit is very sad indeed.

Little My is quite superb in this one, and I do like Too-Ticky as well.

Those are now on a list in my wallet. You have some of the most lyrical ones to come (Moominpappa at Sea, Moominvalley in November). I think Finn Family Moomintroll is the most fun. It's also the first full-length book I remember reading.

Little My and Snufkin are a triumph in Momminsummer Madness: Best. Parents. Ever. IIRC, Too-Ticky was loosely based on Tove's partner, Tuulikki Pietilä.

Thank you. And let me know if there's anything I can look out for for you.

It's odd with the Moomin books at the moment, because when I go back to them, it's like reading them for the first time as I focus on a different character.

It's also the first full-length book I remember reading.

That is lovely.

And now I'll have to re-read Moominsummer Madness. :-) That is the one with the theatre?

As for Too-Ticky, I just loved it when she said, "I wish somebody would write a story sometime about the people who warm up the heroes afterwards."

Moominsummer Madness is the one with the theatre. And the whole episode with Snufkin and the woodies, and Little My and the park keeper. Anarchists rule! Er, sort of.

"I wish somebody would write a story sometime about the people who warm up the heroes afterwards."

*hearts Tove and Too-Ticky* You know, now I think of it, there's lots of really good Tolkien fic on those lines. Alawa's Keepers of the Hearth being the best.

From: [identity profile] katlinel.livejournal.com
Oh yes - Snufkin and the park keeper was great. And the Fillyjonk too. Little My is always there with exactly the right deflating comment. Hee.

I think you've rec'd that fic to me before, and I read it and really enjoyed it so thank you. It's definitely a gap that fic can fill.

Moominland Midwinter is sitting by the computer in the pile of books I need to review in my book journal, and I just picked it up and found this quote.

"'I'm growing angry," said Little My. "When, for once, one could have had some use for a sister.'"

Hee!

*hearts Tove and Too-Ticky with you*

Amazon sent me a link for Vol 2 of Moomin comic strips. I had to resist, but since one of my leaving pressies from my ex-job was an Amazon voucher, I might well indulge.

I have too much in common with Little My!

Go for it with your voucher. I have been dropping large hints to Santa about that Volume 2.
