D is for...

I asked [livejournal.com profile] fictualities for a letter on the letter meme, and got 'D'.

Deep Space Nine. "No, [various friends], you will never persuade me of the merits of Deep Space Nine over Babylon 5... Er, what's that guy meant to be? Cardassian? Oh. And what was his name again? No, not Dukat. No, not Damar either, no, I don't think it began with 'D'..."

Daleks. The big one lives in the front room and the tiny one lives in the back. Where do you keep yours?

Denethor. Ah, Denethor. Sometimes I feel I should apologize, but really I think Peter Jackson should first. And I have let you live (twice, if we're counting WiPs), and I think we have made some beautiful music together.

Dystopias. The handbook of the human heart in extremis. Which can frankly make them more than a bit miserable, and no doubt they suit my d-for-depressive tendencies, but the real favourites are the ones that examine both fear and fearlessness, all that people can do under duress, good and bad: The Far Side of Evil, Swastika Night.

Divas. A passable summary of my taste in music: Aimee Mann, Suzanne Vega, Kirsty MacColl, Kate Bush, Shane MacGowan...

Death-Watch. The bestest-written episode of the bestest television series ever. Or was that The Doctor Dances? Speaking of which...

Doctors. Not just delicious Ten or doleful Nine or dubious Seven or deranged Four but any one of a number of decorative docs. Also, me. Go me!

Dads and Daughters. One of my recurring stories: the dysfunctional, unequal father-son relationship is transformed into the functioning, equal father-daughter relationship. Perhaps it's something to do with reconfiguring patriarchy, or more likely I'm still just an angry teenager. Lonely fucked-up people find a measure of solace in each others' arms is my other favourite story, but seemed to offer less D-potential. Oh, hang on...

Doomed love.

Domed cities. Aren't these the most captivating images? All those tiny lights, and how many other tiny lights are hidden but suggested, and what intersecting lives and hopes and fears they signify... The dome is not essential; from it we can get to fabulous cities in general, and from there we can progress to maps, but enough of my rich fantasy life.

The letter meme: ask me to give you a letter, and then list ten things beginning with it, and explain what these things mean to you.

There was a kind of inevitability to it really...!

I'm coming back, love,
Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream,
My only master.

No wonder that she started my obsession with passionate romances...! And concerning Denethor - mine wasn't even an abusive husband, only a bad father. His portrait in the movie trilogy is one of the (very few) things I really don't like.

I read that as 'Doomed cities', the first time. Which would have said something about you. As it is, my mistake says something about me. :-)

Dr Altariel! Go you, indeed.

Oh go on, can I have a letter, please?

'Doomed cities'

Boom tomorrow!

Oh go on, can I have a letter, please?

You can have a 'T'.

More doomed love! You know, I like the song more than I like the book.

I read 'doomed cities' too. Silly brain.

It's a lovely list, and it made me smile a lot.

May I have a letter, please?

But never boom today. Ah well.

Thank you! And thank you for your list, too. I'll have a think. I'm sure I can spy something beginning with T...

Denethor. Sometimes I feel I should apologize, but really I think Peter Jackson should first.

Oh, absolutely. And I do love it that you mentioned Denethor on this list.

Letter, please?

Whatever it says about you, I suppoose it says the same about me. Since the previous item was "doomed love", I think it's a natural mistake to make. Had the two entries been in the opposite order in the list, I expect I'd have been puzzling over what "domed love" might be.

And I second the "go Altariel" sentiment. :)

Daleks ...Where do you keep yours?

In Cleveland. He's married to my mother, AmyK! (; (Which leads to a funny story... way back in the day when my parents first got aol, my dad wanted to use his first name and last initial as his username. AOL added a 123 onto the end of it, and he remarked, "I wonder just how many other Dale Ks there are, anyway." It took me until just a couple of years ago to connect the dots, but one day, I looked at his email address and burst out into laughter!)

The extra "o" that crept into "suppose" was a genuine typo, not me trying to be clever. Or at least not consciously; who knows what my subconscious may have been up to?

Oh, go on, I could use another, and you won me over with doomed love and domed cities.

Me too. And all my tales tend to be doomed love stories (except the few gen tales I have written). And now I'm trying to quit writing fanfiction to finish my novel which is - guess what? - a doomed love story.

*sighs*

I suppose Faramir and Eowyn count as 'undoomed love' - although there's a fair amount of doom around while they're falling in love... Good luck with getting the novel finished!

Yay! I bet correctly on what your first three Ds would be . :D

I love your definition of dystopias and what they can show us -- particularly about the good things people can do under duress.

What does it say about me that I read "doomed love" as "doomed love"? Oh, yeah, that I'm an incurable romantic with a taste for melodrama, a taste that I guess is either there or not, and either needs no explanation or can't be explained, which perhaps is why you didn't explain it. :D

Great list! Poor Denethor. And I'm amazed that Death-Watch is your favourite episode (and how I somehow didn't know that)

I can't pick a favourite episode of B7 any more. 'Death-Watch' is in my top tier. It's the best episode for the ensemble.
