Earlier Spooks is better, I think, partly because they don't go all boo-hoo and self-pitying every time they have to do something unpleasant. Of course it takes its toll on them but it's all gradual and understated, and makes for much better viewing as a result. This lot believe in what they're doing, sure, but with early Harry/Tom you somehow feel their belief is worth more because you can see how much it's cost them.
And they're not so bloody miserable all the time either.
