I have been a busy little writing bee the past week, polishing off three short stories (all LoTR) since last Monday. On the whole, I'm quite pleased with the way they have turned out.

Firstly, I wrote a short story called Adrift. This was a gap-filler set during the action of Captain, My Captain. I'd been intending to write this gapfiller - for chapter 12 - since that chapter was posted, but could never get a story to work from the idea. Then Isabeau posted her lovely story Motherless, and Adrift came together.

Secondly, I wrote a story about the first meeting of Gandalf and Faramir, called Possessions. Denethor makes a guest appearance, natch. Gandalf is a great deal of fun to write in first-person, although at the end of this story I had a deep sympathy for Denethor.

When I showed Possessions to Mr Altariel, he insisted I write the follow-up. What was interesting about that request was that I'd originally intended to write a story which cut between the first meeting and final parting of Gandalf and Faramir. So, at his behest, and using the title he suggested, this afternoon I wrote The King's Shilling.

Plus, my headache finally pretty much cleared today. I think I was tense about my supervision on Thursday (which went fine, only a handful of very minor rewrites to do), and then was recuperating from it yesterday. London was a bitch to cross on Thursday, as ever.
