I liked [livejournal.com profile] selenak's adaptation of the film lines meme to TV shows:

1. Pick one dozen TV shows that are ones that you have special feelings about.
2. Pick a few lines of dialogue that mean something to you.
3. As people guess the show, strike out that entry.
4. If possible, after the show is guessed, explain why it made the list.

  1. "I think we can call it a bribe." DEEP SPACE NINE, 'In the Pale Moonlight', Quark to Sisko. I had to pick something from this particular episode, but I didn't want to be obvious and pick a line of Garak's.

  2. "Last time I looked up at the stars, something nasty dropped in my eye." STAR COPS, 'Conversations with the Dead', Devis to Spring. I missed off the giveaway follow-up line: "I think it was batshit."

  3. "Nobody's indispensable." BLAKE'S 7, 'Blake', Blake to Deva. Nuff said.

  4. "Please do not throw hands at me." DR WHO, 'Robots of Death'. Not a line you get to use often in everyday life, but worth it when you do. (Hmm, that's three Chris Boucher quotes back to back.)

  5. "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" FIREFLY, pilot episode, Wash-as-a-stegosaurus. One of those moments when you realize everyone who had been telling you to watch this show was entirely correct, and you really are going to love it.

  6. "What a happy little band we are."

  7. "Now, I'm afraid there's going to have to be a certain amount of, well, violence. But at least we know it's all in a good cause, don't we?" THE BLACK ADDER, Prince Harry in the very first episode. Well done, [livejournal.com profile] hafren!

  8. "Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like... f*ckin'... Shaft!" SPACED. Look - somebody made a comedy about me and my friends!

  9. "When a human dies, the soul dies too. We are the source of all religion. We are the afterlife. There is nothing else..." ULTRAVIOLET. Corin Redgrave the vampire to a dying priest.

  10. "Oh marvellous. I'm a cliché."

  11. "Don't interrupt me when I'm eulogizing." DR WHO, 'The Curse of Fenric'. Useful for any evil overlord in training.

  12. "I don't watch tv; it's a cultural wasteland filled with inappropriate metaphors and an unrealistic portrayal of life created by the liberal media elite." BABYLON 5, 'Between the Darkness and the Light'. A Trooper Par-style guard just comes out and says this to Garibaldi. It's this incredibly tense moment, and you've got this grunt philosophizing. Also - what a great line.

Selenak has beaten me to Wash. Is 8 from Spaced? It's the sort of thing they say.

I knew 5 had to be Josh Whedon, but couldn't place the line. Perhaps actually watching Firefly would help.

2 seems very familiar. It wouldn't be Star Cops, would it?

I could guarantee you'd get #1! And well done picking the right instance of #4 in 'Blake' - Avon says it too, but I wasn't thinking of that one.

And it indeed Wash.

Well done, sir. I didn't remember that about 'Little Green Men and Other Martians'. It's almost as if they have a writer in common...

Certainly is Spaced. Tim says it to Bill Bailey, I think.

The ones I knew had gone before I got here, but unless you're being very tricky process of elimination suggests that either (6) or (10) ought to be from The West Wing.

I put #2 in just for you.

For some strange reason, I didn't think of picking one from The West Wing. If I had, it would be "Just trying to get a little pizza in an uncivilized world".

I know! I know!

I had completely forgotten about the sheer splendour of 10 - I'm surprised the Doctor Who fans haven't got that one.

And 6 is from the second greatest programme ever committed to television.

I knew you'd know. I thought some Who fans might have got #10 as well, and possibly the B7 fans too... ah, the fickleness of memory.

No-one was going to get #6.

Shall I just come downstairs and talk to you?

4 ... Not a line you get to use often in everyday life, but worth it when you do

Another favourite from Robots of Death - unfortunately it's a line that crosses my mind most days even if I don't get to say it out loud:
"You know, you're a classic example of the inverse relationship between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain".

Another one that I think a lot: "Kill the humans. Kill the humans."
