Compliments of the season!

A very happy Gauda Prime Day to you all! Twenty-eight years since my girlish dreams were blasted to smithereens, and yet the moment is still so fresh. Happy days!

I remember having no idea of what was coming... and utter shock as all were dispatched.

Yes - so excited to see Blake again, then BAM!

Ah, Gauda Prime Day, who could forget it. I'm a good few years older than you, but the scars still linger...

Every year I have to lick the wounds!

And then you discovered that in fandom they can all live on forever...

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Or not, depending on the fic!

And then you discovered that in fandom they can all live on forever...

- but seldom happily...

A fandom where killing them all counts as a happy ending. :-)

[identity profile] carl-allery.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Eyes wide, hand over mouth because the condenser mike ... oh no, iirc, my brother had actually set up a decent mike on a stand for this last episode and so I was waving furiously at everyone to say *nothing* because it was still recording and I didn't want chatter over the last episode. And then rushing to the phone to phone my best friend as soon as the credits finished and disect the last scene in minute detail as to the significance of the screen blanking *before* the last shot is fired.

Bloody hell, my heart's thumping now just thinking about it! :)

My audio recording contains my disbelieving cry of 'Vila!'. :(

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's heart-breaking!

[identity profile] carl-allery.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
We had learnt that sometimes extreme measures were necessary. My best friend's copy of Destiny of the Daleks contains the following lines:

Dr: This isn't Gallifrey
BF's Mother: Looks more like England to me!

:)

A friend was sent audio copies of TNG when she was at Uni, with added commentary from sister and mum.

I have never been able to look at Patrick Stewart seriously since I heard the utterance 'OMG he's got hairy nipples!' screamed by mum on the tape ;-)

[identity profile] carl-allery.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*snigger* relatives are good value. I once had my mum storm in while I was recording a TOS episode because my dad had hushed her because he was trying to listen to the radio (4). And she had a good old rant about it and I just didn't dare say a word. Not that the radio/cassette perched on the Shorter OED in front of the TV might not have been a clue ... Then she spent the rest of the episode in a squeaky rocking chair. :-/

Sigh. Still can't bring myself to throw out the audio collection.

Happy G.P. Day to you, Altariel. And Happy Solstice too. I might wind up the VHS tonight for a reprise...

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps for the 30th anniversary we should all arrange to watch at 8pm GMT and live blog.

[identity profile] raspberryfool.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be watching at eight, but who's going to do the continuity announcement? :-)

[identity profile] iainjcoleman.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Imagine if LJ had been around then...

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There were only letterzines - analogue LJ!

[identity profile] lil-shepherd.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, at that point I didn't care any more.

[identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, school the next day was a shocked round of, 'Did you see...?'

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
We did that too, in particular we pondered the absence of Servalan.

[identity profile] birdsedge.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed, the absence of Servalan was a major storytelling error. For months afterwards I went around muttering to anyone who would listen: 'Servalan wasn't there, they've got to get them out of it somehow. If it had been real Servalan would have been there to gloat.'

I didn't know about fandom or fanfic and had no insight into the decision from on high to end the series. I just couldn't believe it... And then when time passed and I believed it I couldn't believe it had been done so sloppily. Why not just have the big Monty Python foot come down on them all? It would have made as much sense.

No logic, no resolution, no redemption. no taking Servalan down with them... Gah! I'm still angry!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I gather that the writer assumed when he submitted the script someone would say no... and nobody did.

[identity profile] birdsedge.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It actually felt as though the whole thing had been written with a different ending in mind and 7/8ths of it had been filmed when the phone rang and someone said to the director: I'm sorry but you have to kill them all off... right now. We're not going to a fifth series. So the director walked back into the studio and said: Right, lads, this is what we're gong to do...

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, I was so busy having a wisdom tooth extracted that I forgot about it! Just shows, there's always someone worse off....

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I don't know though...

[identity profile] raspberryfool.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh that was good, I wonder if they'll make another series... ;-)

Is that man in the white coat who attacks Tarrant Deva's (or Diva's) hairdresser?

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2009-12-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And to you!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a great festival!

[identity profile] the-wild-iris.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, those childhood holiday memories :)

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
'Tis the season to be jolly!

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I really think I ought to be British to understand what you're talking about. ;)

Too bad I didn't have British cyberfriends twenty-one years ago, who'd send me DVDs, so that I could understand their conversations.

But since I didn't even speak English twenty-one years ago, I think that explains a lot...

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we make much sense anyway! ;-D But this is a celebration of the date on which the last episode of Blake's 7 was aired (21st December 1981). The rather shocking denouement takes place on the planet Gauda Prime - hence Gauda Prime Day!

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. I guess it isn't among the only six eps of Blake's 7 I happened to find in Vienna on video, many years ago. ;)

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
You'd remember if you saw this one!
