Today

So I was just on the Today programme on Radio 4 talking very briefly about Doctor Who. Catch me if you can, 8.23ish, here.

ETA: I'm reliably told it's on at 2hr 26mins and 30 secs.

ETA2: Now has its own link. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] parrot_knight!

Hurrah!

Yes, I heard you as I was lying in bed not wanting to get up. I wondered as the item was being introduced and I was chuffed when it turned out they had got you on!

Well done.

It was a bit of fun!

How exciting! At 2 hours 23 minutes into the programme I've got an actor talking about "Zero Dark 30", so I'm hoping that you will pop up immediately afterwards.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, you didn't. I tried an hour earlier, in case you meant 7:23 rather than 8:23, but no luck there either. :(

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I'm not sure what's happening there. I'm on just after Peter Mandelson being very huffy about Cameron's speech, and just before the 8.30 news and sports. Hope you can find it!

I've heard it now. My thanks to parrot_knight for his link. You were very good, as were James Naughtie's questions. So how does it feel to be famous? :)

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-25 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, famous for 15 seconds!

Which is where I managed to listen to it. \o/

Oh, brilliant! I didn't know it would be available worldwide!

I particularly liked the point about the difficulty of writing picture-books; it had never occurred to me, but when you folks pointed it out, it was obvious. The process must be similar to writing a drabble.

Oh, I'm glad that was interesting; it felt a bit like it had come from nowhere!

I agree that it felt as if it came from nowhere, but it was still interesting.
I wonder if the interviewer raised the issue because the "Artemus Foul" series is a children's series - though not a picture book - and because Doctor Who, for many, is considered a "children's" series (rather than a "family" series).
But in any case, what those have to do with picture-books... but it was still an interesting point.

Yes, I suspect it was brought up because of his children's books. Several people in my writing group write picture books, so fortunately I had plenty of opinions on the subject!

Now THAT is real fame!

They'll let anyone on the radio these days!

Oh great! Thank you!

Wow! Congrats, that was a nice little item. I listen to Today every morning but our clock radio turns off automatically just before that came on. You were far more interesting than Peter Mandelson!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! I could hear him talking through my headphones as I was waiting to speak, but my mic wasn't live!

[identity profile] steepholm.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That was fun!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed myself!

[identity profile] solanpolarn.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard you! Radio 4 is my usual morning background noise and then they started talking about Doctor Who and I perked up and paid attention. I almost squeed out loud when they said you were going to be on and then there you were! Did one of the interviewers actually mention "fan fiction" and then not get back to it or let anyone else comment on it?

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, James Naughtie mentioned fan writing! That's what I thought I was on to talk about, actually, but reading the programme summary before I went on air, I realized it was just Doctor Who they wanted to talk about. I'm not sure he'd been given the best brief, to be honest.

[identity profile] solanpolarn.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think for those of us who are familiar with fan writing you did make the point about how the story of Doctor Who carries on regardless of its original makers, but it would have been interesting -- and fun for my geeky heart! -- to hear it address more directly on main stream radio.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-25 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Naomi Alderman did a half-hour programme about fanfic recently, but unfortunately it's not available any longer. Here's the link though: it might turn up again.

[identity profile] katlinel.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, you are speaking out of my computer speakers at me. It is just like The Way Back.

There should have been more of you and less of those blokes though.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Security personnel to main tracking gallery!" I should have said it.

[identity profile] qatsi.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Very good, my dear, very good.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-25 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :-)

[identity profile] temeres.livejournal.com 2013-01-25 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
With all due deference to your good self, what impressed me most was that a flagship national news programme could refer to fan fiction - fan literature no less - without any trace of amazement, bafflement or ridicule. The times they have a-changed somewhat. I blame the internets.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2013-01-25 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I blame t'internets too!
