Found!

Yippee! It's true! Two missing episodes of Doctor Who found: The Underwater Menace part 2, and Galaxy 4 part 3. Confirmed by the BBC's official Doctor Who Twitter feed: here. Happy Christmas!

I adore "The Underwater Menace" and am incredibly excited about this one.

ETA: More about finding them from The Radio Times.

Hurrah! Hope you'll be able to see them soon!

One of the stills (http://static.bbc.co.uk/images/ic/qe/crop/626x352/doctorwho/news/adventure_calendar_2011/day_11/the_underwater_menace_ep_02/dr_who_gg209.jpg) does suggest Patrick Troughton is getting in an early rehearsal for The Feathered Serpent.

They just mentioned the rediscovery of the missing episodes in the midnight news on Radio Four!

There are a couple of clips online already and there should be a DVD release some time next year. Can't wait to see more of Troughton in action.

It was jolly nice hearing his voice on the radio yesterday!

It's always a joy when something you thought lost will show up again. Good luck getting your hands on them!

I think there'll be a DVD release pretty soon.

For a lot of money, probably requiring us to buy all the other orphaned episodes again

That's great. What amazes me is that the guy who had them was seemingly blissfully unaware of their significance.

"Galaxy 4, a four-part season opener from 1965, is fondly remembered by those fans old enough to have watched it."

I confess that I can't remember it at all.

I gather he just assumed that they were already back in the archive. Makes you hold out hope for the remaining 106!

Two more at once! They do keep creeping along every now and again.

Hmmm, I'm not convinced The Underwater Menace will be much improved by having part two to look at as well as part three, but the Galaxy 4 episode will give us representative visuals for the story, which will be cool.

I think Underwater Menace is fun! I'm hoping it gets a reappraisal. And it's great to have some Galaxy 4 at last.

My view of The Underwater Menace has certainly changed after seeing part two yesterday. I think it will be reappraised by others.

Hooray!

[identity profile] tiggymalvern.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Underwater Menace was certainly... ambitious. Whether it was wise to attempt to film that kind of serial with 1960s visuals is another question, but they gave it an interesting try!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but if they'd had no ambition, we would never had had "The Web Planet"! And then where would we be?!

I'm glad they've been found, and to think they were pulled out of a skip! Fabby! :-)

Only 106 to go...

[identity profile] raspberryfool.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and it's good to hear from you again, Altariel. :-)

Thank you! :-)

Wonderful. I thought we'd probably reached the end of 'lost episodes'. I'm afraid Underwater Menace isn't on my top hit list, but the return of any missing episodes is a joy. Now could I ask people to check very carefully down the back of the sofa again for any bits of Power of the Daleks and Web of Fear?

It's great. It seems these were episodes that went out to Australia and then came back - which means that there are some cuts. But those shavings are already in archive!

[identity profile] parrot-knight.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Somehow the episodes returned from Australia to be traded among film collectors in southern England in the 1980s. It does make one wonder what else might be out there.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I just assume that everyone knows that we're still looking for missing episodes. But I suppose it's just that I talk to a lot of people who are particularly interested in the matter.

[identity profile] parrot-knight.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
With two episodes turning up at once, I've gone from thinking 'maybe there are two or three more out there' to 'maybe there are half a dozen to a dozen out there'. That's still cautious!

I thought of you as soon as I heard that on the Today programme this morning. Clearly an early Christmas gift from the Who-verse!

All this and a Xmas Day special too!
