Callan: an ITV production. That's the sad loss to British broadcasting, I think, the collapse of most of those ITV franchises.
I said to a non-UK student the other day that the only things British people ever talk about are the NHS, the BBC, and the weather, and he fervently agreed. Even when I'm complaining about individual dramas (see previous post!), it's because I care, and because I feel I have an investment in it, and because I want to contribute to the ongoing debate.
In a way, I think the BBC can claim some credit for Callan as well. Back in those days, the ITV companies saw the BBC as their main rival, and knew that, in order to compete, they had to match the standards the BBC set. It was when they stopped thinking like that that they stopped producing decent television, and their audience collapsed. So the market economists were wrong there, then.
So that's what Mitch Benn looks like! I've only ever heard him on The Now Show...
That made me want to laugh and cry and jump up and down... and here's the thing; even though I don't usually consider myself much of a telly watcher (certainly not up to your standards!) I actually think I have at one time or another seen/heard a bit of every single one of those shows. (Certainly all the ones on the cards - I may have missed one or two of the chanted ones at the end).
Of course! You weren't at that Eastercon where he was a guest! I must have imagined you there in my head. I'm impressed and a little in awe of your full house!
It turned out not to be quite as full when I checked the ones I'd misheard - and if you required listening/viewing of an entire episode then I'd be far lower, especially on recent things. Most of the dramas from the last ten years (apart from the Man in the Blue Box) I have only seen because I wander in/turn round from the PC, when Resident Geek is in late-night viewing mode, and demand "what are you watching?" I never even would've seen Life On Mars if RG hadn't insisted.

That was awesome though. Made me come over all patriotic and there's not much that can hit me like that.

And re Callan - it's a pity Thames went down the pan before the troops could be rallied - hopefully Mitch is in time for the BBC ;)
I may just be about to buy my first non-CD music (if I ever find the MP3 player).

No, no, really, you don't. I've been playing it non-stop for two hours.

I don't understand to this day how ours became capable of walking away from that gig!
I've heard theories, mind you...

It's just in our DNA. Hurrah.
