Nicola Beauman interview

There's an interview with Nicola Beauman of Persephone Books on The F-Word.

On reading that article, I felt rather hit over the head by the term "middlebrow". I'm not even sure if that term has any valid meaning, apart from to distinguish books that are considered to have merit in the action of reading them, compared to all these trivial domestic (ahem) books, written by trivial domestic (ahem) women that Persephone are re-publishing.

I'm also not convinced that the £1 off are going to double their sales, but then maybe I have a poor grasp of economics, along with a poor grasp of literary merit since I can't be fucking arsed to worry about whether a book is high-brow or middle-brow. *chucks up over some D. H. Lawrence*

Or maybe I'm just in a bad mood.

I'm reading Cranford right now - in advance of Sunday's first episode - and it struck me just how well it would fit into Persephone's catalogue: "trivial domestic" book about the middle classes!
