Spooks

Dear Points of View,

Why oh why oh why, when I loved the the last season with the fiery force of a thousand suns, and when I think Ros is TEH AWESUM and there isn't any boring Jenna-of-the-piece Zaf and it's about SPIES dammit - why oh why oh why am I not enjoying the new season of Spooks? Why oh why oh why have you turned it into something alarmingly like Judge John Deed?

Right this wrong immediately.

Yours faithfully,

Disgruntled of Cambridge Circus

Last season of Spooks was really thoughtful and savvy. This season is dumb. Sticking in a retired agent called Connie doesn't count as being clever. Has there been anything with the understated power of that episode where Ruth left?

On Judge Deed: The BBC website dutifully supplied me with a truly awful summary: "Martin Shaw stars as Judge John Deed, a man who is not afraid to question the establishment in the name of justice." Yes, it is exactly as bad as that sounds. Every week, the judge (serial philanderer BUT THAT'S OK because he is a grammar school boy and stands up to the Establishment) battles unlikely career politicians and the wicked, wicked big pharmaceutical companies.

Why do we watch it? Rage can be cleansing. Also, we have a running sweepstake on how early in each episode one of us shouts, "This is PREPOSTEROUS!"

The sweepstake in our household is for how many times in one news programme Fiona Bruce can say "THAAsands".

Am not enjoying this Spooks either. I fell asleep, in fact, during ep 3 and when I woke up I thought I was watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Ooh, we'll be doing that now!

I keep falling asleep during Spooks too, which isn't great for a programme in which the narratives are meant to be suspenseful.

Huh. They missed out 'will make you laugh until you fall off the sofa'.

Ooh, and Amazon.co.uk tells me that it's finally coming out on DVD! I should buy my mum a set for Christmas. Plus - my mum would be very happy with hours of Martin Shaw to ogle. Minus - my dad would kill me.

Doesn't your dad have to go and do things to wood when Judge Deed is on? Perhaps you could get him a matching lathe? ;-)
