Ow...

I just cut my finger chopping onions. Stupid rubbish cooking. Not so badly I need to leave the house and seek out expertise (how dreary would that have been, crossing town in the Friday rush hour?), but bad enough that I went all faint and had to lie down for a bit. It's all plastered over and I can type again now, but I think I'll still take the opportunity to sulk in front of the telly tonight.

Go, you!

I went off and chopped onions again tonight, with the same tearful result. At least the food made it worthwhile.

I hate the tearful onion thing. Popping a cold spoon into my mouth gives temporary relief, and washing my hands under cold water clears it away sufficiently that I can chop the rest of them.

I used to find holding water in my mouth while I chopped would help, but the latest batch seem to be more than usually potent. I don't know what variety they are, unfortunately, and I suspect there's a correlation between teariness and tastiness.

I might try refrigerating them for a bit next time, if I remember....

There's a brilliant photo of my brother, aged about ten, peeling onions for my mother to pickle and wearing a diving mask.
