Review of Russell Jacoby's Picture Imperfect: Utopian Thought for an Anti-Utopian Age.

Meanwhile, the War on Terror becomes the Long War. Well, I'm glad that's brought some clarity to proceedings.

That review article is fascinating - thanks for the link. I found it illuminating on the context of some of my own stuff, e.g. Pound mistaking National Socialism for a vision of a fairer world. And the whole point about 'vision' being generally discredited post-WW2 is amazingly relevant to today. I shall have to look out for the actual book.

I read Russell Jacoby's The End of Utopia some time at the end of last year, and found it very interesting; I'm really looking forwards to seeing how his argument has developed.

Re the Long War, I am recalling, with a sense of foreboding, a sentence in a history of the Thirty Years War I once read: "The original causes of the war had long since been forgotten, but others had arisen to take their place".

That's depressing.

The Long War? What a bland name! I think The Ongoing Clusterfuck is both more descriptive and more colorful.

Sad but true.
