Bujold ficathon

A madness took me, and I agreed to organize a ficathon based on the works of Lois McMaster Bujold, at [livejournal.com profile] bujold_fic. You can read more here.

Sign-ups have already started; I'll be handing out assignments on 12 April, and the deadline for stories is 24 May. So you have Easter to mull your story over - come and give it a go!

Won't be joining the ficathon (what, me try to write Bujold-verse stuff? The thought makes me tremble), but the existance of [livejournal.com profile] bujold_fic alone is intriguing.

Glad to have linked you to the community. Sure you can't be tempted to try your hand at Bujold-verse?

One ficathon at a time for me. I'm doing [livejournal.com profile] multiverse2004. And part of my trembling is that one of my choices for Multiverse includes the Bujold-verse, and it both intrigues and terrifies me. I just don't think I could get the character right. Except that maybe perhaps I might. The problem is compounded by the fact that the other character in that particular request is also an interesting-character-that-I-don't-think-I-can-get-right. Hence my tearing of hair.

I only found out after I got this ficathon up and running that Multiverse was running, with the Vorkosigan universe as one of the options - slightly kicking myself that I've probably cut down on sign-ups. Looking forward to seeing your story when it's done; hope you get the characters to behave!

I don't think I'll be signing up as ficathons scare me stiff - what if I can't write the story! - but I'll certainly be visiting to read when it's up. The world needs more Bujold fanfic; I've yet to find any I wnat to read, even. Good luck with it anyway!

I understand about the ficathon pressure - I'm wondering slightly what I've let myself in for! Could I tempt you to look at the requests and see whether anything stirs your imagination...?

I'd be a bit tempted if I wasn't already doing Multiverse and trying to get back to a couple of unfinished fics that various ficathons have kept me from. I'm reading Diplomatic Immunity at the moment so I've almost read everything in Miles's universe except for Falling Free (though I'd like to read more about quaddies). However I'm also very leery of writing for a written fandom as I'd have to try to duplicate Bujold's style and I don't own any of her books so I couldn't look anything up. My habit is only affordable due to the public library.

I'd be interested to read the results though.

Sympathize about not having the books to hand, I don't think I could try this if I couldn't lay my hands on them quickly for reference. I'll definitely post here when the stories arrive, so watch this space!

I liked Falling Free a great deal: a straightforward book, but with a lot to like about it. Have you read any of the Chalion books?

I must order Falling Free from the library too. I would have if I'd known this one was about quaddies.

I've read The Curse of Chalion (I was so upset about the crow and the animals) and I have Paladin of Souls from the library to read after Diplomatic Immunity (I thought I needed a lot of books for my holiday but I ended up reading two excellent ones from the resort library--and neither of them SF/F.) I think they have the third Chalion one too so I'll go on to that sometime this year.

I held of getting Falling Free for ages because it didn't have the set of characters I was used to. Then I found it going incredibly cheap secondhand and thought, "Might as well..." - and it's very enjoyable.

I still haven't got the third Chalion book (her UK publisher dropped it and I'll have to schlepp it in from the US - forgot to remind Mr A. last time he was out).
