the middle of each episode seems to trail off somehow

You've put your finger right on it. The last one I saw (the one on E4 last week), it got past the opening, and I thought, "You know, I just can't be bothered sitting through this." I suspect it might have something to do with there being no real story arc, so the main content of each episode never really gets past banal.
