B5, B7, DS9

I've been devouring the season 2 Babylon 5 DVDs and hugely enjoying them. Several things have struck me in the watching. I'm amazed at how little Sheridan is annoying me this time round - actually, let's be more precise: I still want to smack his smug smirking face, but I think Boxleitner is doing a great performance.

I can never remember the names of episodes of B5, but I did have a faint recollection when I put the DVD in that The Coming of Shadows was one I was going to enjoy and I was completely right - so far my favourite episode, one of those moments when everything swings in an entirely new and shocking direction. All my G'Kar love is coming back, not least in The Coming of Shadows, but particularly in Acts of Sacrifice whre he is stabbed to get next to nothing from Earth and the Minbari.

It has also been brought home to me repeatedly just what a good performance Richard Biggs put in, and how very sad his early death was.

We watched 'Aftermath' and 'Powerplay' last night. I really do love both these episodes, and to see them all shiny and nice is such a treat. The scene with the two Federation soldiers at the start of 'Aftermath' is smashing ("We're out of the war now... Urk!"). In fact, I think the episode would have been better if it had been them rather than Servalan brought back to Mellanby's base. Question: what do people think 'Section Leader' equates to? Sergeant? Corporal? And why does the Federation put its troopers in rustling nylon? Unstealthy.

In discussion of B5 with Mr A., he said that he found the end of B5 a cop-out. His preference would have been for everything to have ended, as promised, "in fire", with everyone and everything destroyed - and then a closing shot of a green shoot on the Narn homeworld. I agree - much cooler. Other finales? I would have liked DS9 to end with a shot of Benny Russell at the typewriter, typing "The End". The end of B7 is, of course, perfection. What will Doctor Who deliver tonight...? *gnaws knuckles and checks the time*
