Laugh a minute

Watched back Not Only... But Always the other night; I think it was meant to be/was billed as a play about Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, but inevitably Cook was more interesting. (The biography on which the play was based, Peter Cook by Harry Thompson, is well worth a read.) Rhys Ifans as Peter Cook was just perfect. The play also brought home something that I think I'd always vaguely known but never before seen expressed so clearly: that Jonathan Miller is a crashing bore.

Nebulous is a geekish and amiable Radio 4 comedy starring Mark Gatiss as Professor Nebulous, who runs an eco-trouble shooting organisation called K.E.N.T. (it stands for something new every week). It might help to have a passing knowledge of Doom-watch and late-Pertwee early-Baker Dr Who, but I don't think that's essential... The first week's episode had a Meglos-style villain, part-human, part-cactus: "It's humanoid and cactilinear." Anyway, it's amusing me. (I think you can listen to last week's episode via that link.)

Meanwhile, the Blackadder vs. Hitch-hiker's Deathmatch has been very closely tied, up until early this morning, when Blackadder inched ahead 21 votes to Hitch-hiker's 18. I'd love there to be 42 votes cast. Come on, you lot, I only need 3 more.

Edited to add: Blackadder wins, 24 votes to 19. [livejournal.com profile] applegnat, all that vote-stacking paid off! *lol*

It is humanoid and cactilinear

Ah! That's where you got it from? I saw it in your bio the other day.

Vote duly cast.

It's such a good word: "cactilinear". Very satisfying to say.

Vote duly cast.

Bless you, my child.

Yes, I thought it was rather a good word, too. And not only that, but it's real: if you heard it on Radio 4, it must be true.

And if ever they use it on the Today programme, I'll know it's not only true but right.

BTW, you just sealed the victory for Blackadder.

that Jonathan Miller is a crashing bore.

LOL. My parents went to a televised lecture that he gave years ago and during one shot of the audience you could actually see that my mum was nodding off!

I'm afraid I didn't do the Deathmatch. I couldn't decide which was funnier so would have been tempted to choose both, which might have screwed up your poll!

I could vote again, if you like. I'd feel better about it, one for each side.

The Blackadder DVDs just got me through the flu. Possibly it's only my sense of overwhelming gratitude that impelled me to vote for it; I hope this doesn't mess up the high scientific quality of your research.

Entirely in the spirit of it.

Glad you're recovered from flu.

My parents went to a televised lecture that he gave years ago and during one shot of the audience you could actually see that my mum was nodding off!

Brilliant!

I found the Deathmatch almost impossible to do too, but decided HH was probably a work of genius, for the story of the B Ark alone.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2005-01-11 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Can you actually do that? It's certainly in the spirit of the poll, since there was vote-stacking by Blackadder supporters!

[identity profile] matildabj.livejournal.com 2005-01-11 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't think of that. I'll try logging out and doing it anonymously...

*looks shifty*

Blackadder won?

*fakes her very best british upper class accent*

Of course.

Thanks for the radio link :D

I do like how crooked this poll is...!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2005-01-11 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hope you enjoy it!

Aha, it paid off!!

Now for my short vacation, consisting of an ellipse.
