Once and future kings

Wow, [livejournal.com profile] valderys has written this gorgeous fic at my bidding, Morning Out of Darkness. It's a crossover between Merlin and my favourite Rosemary Sutcliff novel, The Lantern-Bearers (which is also - in part - a retelling of the Arthurian story). Really beautiful. Thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] valderys!

Blood Feud

I picked up Blood Feud by Rosemary Sutcliff at the weekend, in the Old Children's Bookshop in Edinburgh, on the excellent advice of [personal profile] katlinel. I read it on the train home, and I think that it may possibly be just a tiny bit slashy...?

Five moments in post-Roman Britain

As part of the recent "Five Things" meme that went around, I asked [livejournal.com profile] forodwaith for five moments in the life of Aquila (the hero of Rosemary Sutcliff's The Lantern-Bearers) that we did not see in the book.

And [livejournal.com profile] forodwaith has written these beautiful, melancholy vignettes. I am extremely lucky.

Books

Good pickings in town today, including one of the Dolphin Rings books by Rosemary Sutcliff that I was missing, The Silver Branch, and the bookshop owner taking pity on me when I came up to the till with a pile and then saw the one I'd gone if for (he knocked 50p off).

Got Brendan Kennelly's Glimpses: very short poems, no more than a few lines, vernacular and sharp and funny:
