Caretaking

What aid can come to this heavy house? Be warned, this is a very sad drabble.

Caretaking

Minas Tirith, 2988 T.A.

After the funeral, Finduilas’ brother stays, as the custom demands, to help bear the burden. But what aid can come to this heavy house? The walls and the roof may stand, but her death has severed feeling. In her wake remain a speechless man and two dazed boys.

The wintry skies weigh down like stone. Imrahil drifts around the house like a sinking ship. In a pale blue room, he finds the widower, sitting with his hand across his face. Propped beside him, a small boy keeps watch. Their fingers interlock. Quiet, the boy’s eyes say. He needs to sleep.

This was very sad, but also very beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing.

I am just in the process of writing a Finduilas funeral piece, funnily enough. I started it last night.

Thank you. And of course I'm very interested to read your piece when it's ready.

a speechless man and two dazed boys That's such a perfect, albeit desperately sad, description. And Faramir sitting holding his father's hand, doing that fiercely-protective thing that small children do, is heartbreaking.

Sad, indeed, but beautifully expressive.

*sigh* So much in those last lines...

It's a sad one.

That's very accurate and astute in its description of bereavement - the daze, the speechlessness, the leaden feeling. And the image of Faramir (is is supposed to be Faramir?) clinging to his father's hand is absolutely heart-rendering.

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] munditia, it's a sad one. Yes, that's meant to be Faramir.
