Leonard Cohen ukelele covers subculture

Hallelujah, George Formby style.

I wound up on this blog via the Riddley Walker annotations site, where I also learned that there is a DVD of a theatre production of RW, performed in Waterford in November 2007. Who said you can't learn anything off the internet? And why do I not have a Riddley Walker icon?

Also, via [livejournal.com profile] shezan: excellent piece by Johann Hari on excess and recession in Dubai.

Brilliant!

I shall have to look for "Take this Waltz", "Alexandra Leaving" or "Dance Me to the End of Love" in the same style.

That's priceless.

I've got a friend working in Dubai, but it does look an abominable, soulless place. I didn't know they had no concept of bankruptcy (though if I worked out there, I hope I would have the sense to find out how the law worked first).

I hope his next trick will be When I'm Cleaning Windows in the style of Leonard Cohen.

Have you ever heard the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain?

There was a fabulous documentary about them on Saturday morning Radio 4 last summer presented by Bill Bailey. Their rendition of the Dambusters March has to be heard to be believed. Guaranteed to put a smile on any face.

[livejournal.com profile] mrazalais was also ranting about that Dubai article, at length. They'll be first to go when the sea levels start to rise...
