For some inexplicable reason my DVD player defaults to subtitles on if there's already a disc in when you press the "power" remote button, but only on certain discs (Seasons 2 and 3 of Stargate SG-1, but not season 1, for example).

Oh, and I entirely agree about the eggs and tomatoes thing.
