The Looking Glass War

Note to self: don't read Le Carré on cold, damp Sunday mornings when you're indulging in bleakness. What a book, though. I shall now go to the cinema to see Wimbledon, which will leave me cheery and at one with the world.

I'm sorry about the bleakness. But enjoy the film!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
The bleakness is entirely self-inflicted and necessary at the moment, I think. But film-related cheeriness will be a nice relief!

See, that's the thing about INFJs. You actually want to be cheery and at one with the world. Ah, well, nobody's perfect.

;-)

Actually, we want the world to be at one with us.

Enjoy the film.

The trailers and posters haven't appealed to me at all.

On the other hand, we did watch '10 Things I Hate About You' again last night.

Fair point. :)

You have it!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you're particularly fond of either Paul Bettany or tennis, I don't think you'd enjoy it much (weak female lead).

'10 Things...' got an honorary mention when we were coming up with our list of top 5 romcoms at Pizza Express afterwards (we decided it was a teencom rather than a romcom, so it didn't make the list).

Oooh, good subject. What was your list?

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
In no particular order:

Miss Congeniality
Addicted to Love
Grosse Pointe Blank
Two Weeks' Notice
Legally Blonde

I wanted When Harry Met Sally, but Mr A. can't sit through it, and it was a shared list.

I've only seen the last of those, and I was on an aeroplane not bothering with the soundtrack, so the finer points of the plot eluded me...

There must be rom coms I like, but my brain is refusing to offer up anything closer to home than Romuald et Juliette. Gosh, it's years since I've seen that. I wish it would show up on BBC4 or something.

No Paul Bettany and tennis are not my favourite things. Besides, I got spoilt for tennis heroines after Nicolette in Streatfeild's 'Tennis Shoes'.

'10 Things' is definitely a teencom. Sugoll spent a lot of time picking out the bits from it that were mocked in 'Not Another Teen Movie'.

I think 'Legally Blonde', 'Addicted to Love' and 'Grosse Pointe Blank' would be on my list too, along with 'When Harry Met Sally'. I'd be torn between 'Four Weddings' and 'Notting Hill' for the 5th. I thought of 'Adventures in Babysitting', but that's a teen movie as well.

Legally Blonde rocks! Really, it's absolutely hilarious. Also, it is thoroughly and satisfyingly feminist. Grosse Pointe Blank is about a hired killer (the admirable John Cusack) going back to his high-school reunion.

Addicted to Love has Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick bent on revenge on the ex-partners who jilted them (and ran off with each other).

The other two are both Sandra Bullock film. We've watched Miss Congeniality far too many times. Michael Caine. William Shatner. Gosh, I really want to see it again now.

Definitely Notting Hill over Four Weddings. I can't stand the Andie MacDowell character in Four Weddings.

Oh! Just remembered Groundhog Day! And Mr A. just shouted up, "To Catch A Thief!"

Fair point.

I don't think I've seen 'To Catch a Thief'.

Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.

Haven't read LGW but I know what you mean (maybe). I have to leave about 2-3 months between JLC books because they're so depressing.

Oh yeah - cool George icon.

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2004-09-28 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
I started straight away on Call for the Dead, but then the Callan book I ordered second-hand off Amazon arrived, so I've just read that instead.

Glad you like the icon!

Call for t'Dead is very good, and not even really depressing.

There's only been a couple of murders and a marital breakdown so far, so I think that's relatively cheerful for a Le Carré.
